Isn't a doctor the one who is supposed to reccommend meds when and if you need them?

WOW, there are a bunch of liberals here! haha. Commercials cost lots of money --who has money in today's economy? Banks and Pharma companies. Also the average time a doc spends with a patient per visit is 3-5 min. Some patients dont know that a particular problem can be treated, they just think that is the way life is (ED, depression). And of course, it drives business. Sometimes it can go overboard creating what doctors call "hallmark diseases" meaning like valentines day - the drug was created first, then they sat around and thought about what they could come up to treat with it. sad but true. although i think there is a place for it, I do believe it is wayyy overdone

Many people think the doctor is ordering the drugs. You would be surprised at how much control the pharmacy has in your local hospital. The doctor can order a drug, then the pharmacist comes out and tells him something else works better and he will use the pharmacicst reccomendation. This is the same thing with all these TV commercials. Its the power of suggestion.

Because big business runs the government....drug companies have to market a new drug to pay for R&D (millions and millions) the more they market a new drug, more people are likely to ask their doctor........
