I mean, How do they send the letters? Do they have their own planes/buses? Do they use commercial airlines?

What happens when you forward your mail? Do they check letter by letter against the database to see wich ones need to be fwd?

I alwas been curious about this.

The USPS uses the spoke and wheel design for moving most mail. The mail is picked up at your house and goes to the local post office and then on to a district processing center, then onto a regional center or airport depending on destination and then the reverse happens. Letter Carriers have to visually recognize every piece of forwardable mail and drop it in a bin for processing in the CFS (computer forwarding system.) To learn more about what Letter Carriers do have a look at NALC.org. If you want to know more about the general post office system you can have a look at USPS.com

I worked for Royal Mail..... When you put a letter in the post box it gets taken away to the local sorting office. The people in there sort the letters by the stamp values and size of the letters (short and long). The more you paid for the stamps the quicker it will get to the next phase of sorting. Once this happens the sorters will then sort the mail according to whether it is meant to go. This is where they put the letters into little pigeon holes. There is a pigeon hole for each postcode/zip code in your area and then several for places outside your area. There will be one for foriegn mail and others for major cities that are nearby. Every so often someone comes around taking all the letters out of one places pigeon hole. Those letters will get taken to the next stage of their journey. If that's nearby it'll be by van, if it's far away by plane and if it's medium distance it'll be by train. Some airlines, coach companies and train companies have deals with mail companies to transport mail but most mail services have their own transport too. steekyjim@yahoo.com if you have any more questions.
