The 2002 Toyota Sienna is suggested to run off of 91 octane fuel. Thats the fuel used when testing is done for horsepower, torque and fuel economy. The engine's computer and senors will adjust to using 87 octane with no problems and honestly you will probably never notice a difference, especially if you use a high quality fuel. Good Luck!!

The octane rating of gasoline is a measure of how much pressure and heat it can withstand before igniting without a spark. This condition is called 'preignition.' When this happens, the explosion in the cylinder is acting against the upward travel of the piston, instead of pushing down on it as it goes down in the cyinder, making power as it should. As you can imagine, if this powerful explosion happened too early, the force might break the piston or piston rod. A mild condition like this is called 'ping' and sounds like clicking coming from the engine. The more serious condition is 'knock' and sounds just like the word would make you expect. If your engine is designed for regular gasoline, and does not knock or ping, then putting higher octane gas will only improve the gasoline retailer's sales receipts. Higher compression engines, which require high octane gas to prevent ping and knock, are more efficient than low compression engines, so they get better gas mileage. But it's not the gas that does it, it's the compression. A good analogy is the couch potato who never exercises. Drinking Powerade will not actually harm him, but his body is in no condition to benefit from it, so it won't make him a faster runner. It can't correct a problem he doesn't have.

I own a 2002 Toyota Sienna and had problems starting my car off and on for awhile. The problem was that it seemed to idle too low. It was very frustrating. I eventually got some fuel additives to clean out the fuel system and also switched to premium 93 octane gas. All this stuff is confusing to me. Maybe I'm wasting my money, but my car has 240,000 miles on it and I think you get what you pay for. After reading this I may switch to 91 octane, however. Also, after driving on the 93 octane for awhile, I switched to 87 octane because I was broke.
Thanks my 2 cents.

welll lets say this.... 87 is trash gas ....if you buy 7 dollars worth of 87 and 7 dollars worth of 91 ... guess what... they last the same but 91 is better for motor.... if you dont believe me try it and find out.... what ever you do ... dont goto arco, valera, or thrifty gas stations(more trash gas).... but look for them to see if cheveron , shell, 76 or mobil is across the street to arco, valera, and thrifty.. that way you get good gas at trash gas prices... the common misconception is that yes all gas come from the same off shore refineries, but when they goto the company refineries, additives are added thus making them different.... when i had my car, i used only cheveron 91 octane, a buddy of mine borrowed my car and ran it dry then refilled it with arco and a day later with the arco gas my motor took a dump on me... ever since then .. i did a fuel flush and kept to cheveron 91 and it's been a champ!!!!

Top Tier 91 is recommended, but Top Tier 87 is acceptable.
(This info IS in the owner's manual- I promise!)
