A true wine connisuir can tell by the taste or aroma based. However the average person does not know one from another and it is the label. I use to manage a place and would put the cheap crap in the expensive looking bottles and everyone was happy.

Why would someone want to trick their friends? That's not someone I'd keep on *my* speed dial for long, that's for sure.
If you can't tell the difference between Zinfandel and Reisling, then you certainly aren't going to be able to tell the difference between Two Buck Chuck and Caymus. But, just because you can't doesn't mean that no one can. Just because your 'friends' can't, doesn't mean that no one can.
Yes, wine is highly subjective. Tell someone it's good and they are more likely to enjoy it. But, I can't tell you home any times we've had a "good" bottle of wine, complimented the host, and then gotten home and said "Wow, that just didn't taste right."

The only thing I have to go by is that we all have brains that function in the same way, and that they all receive input from the same source. In the case of color, that means the cones in the eyes (the "rods" are for black-and-white vision). That doesn't prove that we all see the same thing when we see a particular color, but I think it's as close as we can come without literally being able to know what someone else thinks. However, Mr. Spock (you know - green Vulcan guy with pointy ears???) once said, "A difference that makes no difference IS no difference," and I think this is one of those times :-)

LOL. That's because people try to impress to much. I drank a $1500 dollar bottle of wine once I would have been just as impressed if they poured me my favorite bottle of red that is $20! It did taste a little more musty though, not to me worth the extra $1480, but if you've got the money what the hell right? Better then finding an inexpensive bottle of wine that you might like and feeding thousands of people in a third world country right.... RIGHT???...huh

If you fooled anyone they were idiots. I work with and sell those ":expensive" wines daily. If you have a palate they are amazing. However if you drink a big big red before it is ripe it will probably taste awful to you. tannins can be nasty before taming.

No, there is actually a huge difference--to people who know and drink wine. I can tell a huge difference between the quality and the not-so-quality, just as any other "wino" can.
