it works off the heat sink manifold with a spring that warms up inside the choke hsng that will open the choke plate on top of the carb more the warmer it gets. electric chokes didnt come out till past 1973.sweet motor combo though. wish I still had my 72 stang with 351c.

the 351c engine had an automatic choke whether it was electric or mechanical. actual manual chokes in automobiles were phased out in the late 50s due to operator error. Also it was the very first step made by the auto industry to help limit pollution!! possibly the person ashing the question wants to know if it had a mechanical automatic choke or electric as these were the two types of Automatics chokes that were used during this time.

Neither, the last Mustang with a manual choke was the Boss 429's. The automatic choke is not electric, it is controlled by hot air drawn through the bimetallic coil spring in the chamber.

If you see an electrical wire running out of the choke wind -up spring is an electrical setup. If you don.t see any wires on the right hand side of the carb, it's mechanical. You can adjust either but be sure your choke pull-off is working properly before you adjust anything.

In 1971 it would have been manual. Electric chokes dident come out till much later.
