I also have a hip problem I was born with and am presently in the middle of filling out papers for a lawyer to help me.
First go to the social security office to file your claim or this can be done on the web. (check the links below)
Be prepared for a very long form, any way you do it. After the initial form, there will be more you need to fill out that they mail to you about your daily living.
About 80% of the time they will deny your claim. Don't give up though. Go get a lawyer when you receive your letter from social security about denying your claim, that specializes in helping people win claims with social security. There will be more paperwork to fill out for them. That is where I stand now.
It can take quite some time to get everything finished but if they lose your case, you don't pay. If they win, the social security pays them usually 25% of your back pay you receive, back to the first file date.
There are lots of lawyers that specialize in social security claims. Look online or in your phone book if you would rather use someone local.
It's all a paper trail and a practice in patience.
Good luck and while you wait for them to make their decisions, go get all the help you can get from other agencies. Department of family services can give you a list of places that offer temporary assistance with food and utilities.

Do you really want to go on disability? You can find a job working from a wheelchair. I have a friend that has a job working on a bed beside his work!
If you really are disabled, first contact your Social Security office and make a claim. You will probably be rejected. After three rejections, THEN hire a blood sucking lawyer!
