I lived in Columbus, GA as a child and I remember eating this fruit. All I remember was that it was small, approximately the size of a quarter, and it had a light green skin that you would peel before eating. As I recall it was sweet!

I think the skin was thicker than an apple but not as rough as an orange. It wasn't a lychee or rambutan or kiwi or kumquat. I don't think it is a berry because you don't usually need to peel berries before eating. The flesh inside is also juicy (not solid like an apple for example). Hope that helps! Thanks for the input!

2. Update. Thanks for the new information. I still have not found an answer for you but did find 2 other helpful websites: http://www.fruitlovers.com/fruittreedescriptions.html and http://www.crfg.org/pubs/ff/index.html where there are photos and descriptions of fruit. I will keep trying for you but let us know if you find it.
1. Maybe a Rambutan or a Huckleberry. I need a better description to help you. Is it smooth or... Is it's peel more like and apple or orange or... Does it have seeds? Does it grow on a tree or bush?
Anyway, perhaps you can find your answer from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page), just do a search. They have photos and descriptions. Below are a few items which you may want to take a look.
If you give us more info. I'd be glad to search further.
