No--Yellow as part of a stop light means "Prepare to Stop, clear the intersection", Flashing Yellow by It's self means "Proceed with Caution". If your discussion has a more deeper intent. Maybe when my life is going green and moving along--and that i see that it's going to end--I choose to "rage" then slow down, and not go so softly into that goodnight.

Well, the yellow light does mean slow down, but on the other hand it means warning. People are always are eager to rush and go through without it turning red, so they won't have to wait due to their impatience. It's hard to miss actually, as the majority of drivers do it. It's not illegal actually and the counties have given the right for them to speed as needed to cross through. On the other hand, you have the people who are really impatient. I am guessing that may be who you are asking about being shocked at their reactions. These people are about 100-250 feet in their car driving, and they see the yellow light, which is about 15 seconds away from them. They then hit the accelerator and try to make it. Here are the outcomes:
1.) They Make It Luckily
2.) They Come To A Screeching Halt, And Find Their Selves At The Middle Of The Intersection Because They Didn't Stop On Time - Note: It Is Embarrassing
3.) Or... They Hit Someone Who Thinks That The Person Will Stop At The Yellow As Intended
All these possibilities are why they do it and the outcome. Usually, to tell you the truth, they are mostly on the cell phone chatting away. I have people pass the red light as if it was green as grass. What is really crazy is that they come about 1 minute later. I saw 3 people do that today and I thought the roads were safe in my neighborhood. Well, all those drivers and the people who have read this, be very careful when crossing and trying to make the light or those who are trying to get by without causing and accident. Remember that you should always pay attention no matter what, because anything can happen........

Well, when you compare their selfishness with their respect for this great society, you can see where their priorities lie.
In Michigan, people will push the yellow so hard that they enter the intersection after the light is red. Even if people are waiting to make a left turn! They don't do that in California, where there are red-light cameras.

I've always followed the rule of thumb that if I'm at the solid line or really really close then I'm too far to stop and I just go through the yellow light.

If you are approaching an intersection and the light turns yellow and you can't make it through the intersection before the light turns red you should stop.If you are starting to go through an intersection and the light turns yellow speed up to get through the intersection before the light turns red.If you slow down when the light turns yellow you will never get through the intersection before the light turns red and smacko.

Yellow DOESN'T mean slow down. It means STOP if you have enough time to, or GET MOVING if you you don't have time to stop.
The MAIN purpose of the yellow light is to let you know a change is in the works.

You're kind of a weird guy. You are also not much of a reader. You also tend to pigeonhole people. You paint them all with one brush. You tend to stereotype a lot of people based on your observations of a few. These are concepts that you can learn about on your own. If you have one, go back and read your driver handbook. It will "make things sure", as you would say. You can get one at your local DMV. Incidentally, that's where you'll eventually get your license. Good luck with that. God help the rest of us. To answer your last question, all human behavior is motivated by selfishness. All of it. Every single act. I challenge you to find even one thing that has been done on this planet that was not done out of selfishness. Just one. You can't do it.

First let's think about how many people drive too close to the person in front of them. Now then, are you going to slam on your brakes at that yellow light? Heh heh, not me.
