The only time it could be a potential problem in the slightest is if you're using an ammonia dye in a small unventilated room. But that is bad for anyone not just fetuses so she's probably not going to do that anyway. The only thing I would mention is that when you're pregnant or right after pregnancy your hair tends to fall out more...and right after you dye your hair if you don't condition well enough it can fall out some too. So when you're pregnant and dye your hair, there's a good chance you'll think you're going bald for a few days afterward. So using conditioner and less harsh dye is probably a good idea.

PS~ Brat, technically they recommend not using baby powder at all now. It now comes in a cream version because apparently it's bad for babies to inhale it.

It should be fine sometimes during pregnancy the dyes do not take due to a change in the hair but it shouldn't harm the baby as long as the dyes are not too strong

It seems to me that many doctors are torn over this question. Some say yes...and some say no. My idea is if you don't have to...then don't do it. My friends doctor told her it was okay..and she did and everything is fine with her 8 month old. But I decided I wouldn't dye my hair and risk causing any harm to the baby, If there is any doubt at all...I wouldn't do it.

If smoking causes damage to a fetus it stands to reason that inhaling chemicals from hair dye would also cause harm. You have to be willing to make 9 months of sacrifices if you want a healthy baby.

There has been debate about whether ingredients in hair dyes can cause cancer... So I'd say it's a good idea to avoid. If she MUST, semi-permanent dyes are considered safer than permanent ones.

I've heard that dying your hair could cause cancer if you do it over a long period of time and maybe it depends on what type of dye is used. ALSO: There are warnings on some nail polish bottles stating that it has been known in the state of CA to cause cancer and damage to unborn fetuses. Now...I think I'd take some precautions and decided...what's more important...baby or cosmetics ? Nowdays, everything's bad for you...so you can't worry about everything. Things done in moderation should be okay.ALSO : On the baby...Do not use baby powder containing TALC. Use only cornstarch powders. Talc has been known to cause repoductive organ cancer.

Wouldnt suggest it. When you are pregnant, the hormones that go thru your body can affect your hair. She should not color or perm her hair while pregnant. Due to the hormones, it may not turn out right.

I have always read (and was always told) that as long as you wait until after the first trimester (12 weeks) dying your hair has no effect on the baby. I dyed mine at 11 weeks (oops) and my baby's as healthy as a 7 month old can be. :-)
I'd just recommend her dying it close to her natural color so that she won't have to dye it as often- especially since her hair will grow more now then it ever has before!
