I have a dog on seizure meds for epilepsy for years. Her personality remained the same. If anything she may have been a tiny bit calmer, not even noticeable. It's worth it, the meds aren't expensive, I believe I gave Princess phenobarbital once daily. The seizures are so hard on them to go through the seizures.

Good Luck!

If the seizures are severe and often enough, you really don't have an option of not putting him on medication.

The first thing you need to find out though is whether or not the seizure activity is being caused by something other than irregular brain activity. Liver disease and certain tumors can cause seizures as well. Your veterinarian will need to perform tests to rule these things out. Also, when your animal is put on the seizure medication his blood levels of the drug(s) must be monitored on a regular basis, and his organ function as well. There isn't any way to estimate cost other than to ask your pet's doctor for an estimate.

Most dogs do very well for quite a long time on seizure medications. However, you must be aware of the fact that this is an abnormality, and with that comes the possibility of a shortened lifespan as well.

You should discuss all of your concerns with your vet. But you are ready to put him on medication to help him I'm sure. He is just as much a family member as anyone else who lives with you and the same principle applies to him as it would them. Would you get another family member epilepsy med if they had a seizure? Of course.
The medications they place him on can have many different side effects one of them being liver damage but simple blood tests can determine this and monitor it.
The cost depends on the prescription.
Also you can try adding fresh ground/ sliced ginger to his food, if he'll eat it. This is a known alternative treatment for epilepsy in the alternative medicine world. Although not as effective as Rx.
Good Luck wish you the best!

Your going to have to go on the medications. I have no idea of the price but the seizures will continue to worsen. For the most part side effects aren't bad and won't make it worse. Seizures without medications witll eventually cause death. It's basically the only way to prevent seizures. If you can't afford it many shelters will place him with a home that can. I really hope it works out for you. Its a challenge when their is something wrong with a pet.

ask your vet. The 2 most common seizure medications I've seen used are phenobarbitol and potassium bromide, although there are others out there. You will have to have regular blood checks to make sure that the drug is at thereapeutic levels in your dog. Also phenobarb seems to have more side effects than potassium bromide. But your vet should be able to address all of the concerns for you.

NOT putting the dog on a medication will be worse. There are a couple of meds that vets try for seizures. you will probably start with phenobarbitol which is really cheap. You will then need to have the phenobarb levels checked regularly to make sure your dog is on the correct dose of phenbobarb.

whilst they attempt, they might have the potential to allow you to be conscious of greater. My little lady has seizures and a extreme speech postpone yet they're the two brought about via some thing larger. One has no longer brought about the different. those 2 issues would mean no longer something in any respect different than the infant has a seizure sickness and is a prior due talker. My infant brother on no account reported something different than "mine" and "cookie" till he became 3 years and 3 months previous. Then he began talking complete, 5-8 notice sentences in a pair of week. each infant's speech develops at a different fee, and you'd be stunned the place the ends of the "widely used" spectrum lye for each age bracket. communicate on your pediatrician or nurse approximately your concerns- that may additionally assist you dodge leaping to any conclusions.
