Hi -
Here are some suggestions.
I don't recommend getting him something like that. Here is why:
He obviously knows A LOT about radios, and enjoys collecting the old radios. Well, the radio you may want to get him might be a peice of crap in his mind, or something not that special. And ofcourse since people are good people, he won't tell you he doesn't want it.
I have had this happen to me. I have played guitar for about 7 years. People know I love guitars, and rock music. At my birthday, everyone thinks that getting me something to do with guitars will be something that I will like. I end up getting cheap stuff that I would never use, and stuff that really doesn't interest me. For example. I have an expensive guitar tuner, it works perfect. It may not look great, but it is expensive, and very accurate. A relative will see it, think it is cheap, and will go buy a cheap, good looking crappy tuner. Ofcourse I say its awesome, and will replace the one I am using, but, it won't.
Get him something else. You take a big risk getting him something you "think" he might like. If you don't know as much about radios as him, don't get him ANYTHING to do with radios!
If anything, get him a gift card to some place that carrys a lot of radio stuff. For example, RadioShack! I know giftcards are old, but it is the best. It gives him the freedom to get something nice, or to use the giftcard for something he needs!
Good luck!

Consider some radio memorabilia like something with his old station's call letters, old radio programs, etc. It would be great to revive his old memories but he won't be disappointed by something "cheap" like the previous answerer talked about.
Interesting new radio programs (available on CD) were the Star Wars ones on Public Radio. It's retro, because it's a radio program, but it's new, because it's Star Wars (in stereo) and not the 1940's programs (in mono). Of course, they're only good if you like SW (the originals). They included background info that tied up some of the movie loose ends...
