Just a high protein diet stops some kinds of canine epilepsy.

Do not be concerned about the side effects of such medications. If the occur they will go away and if they concern you just call the vet and ask about them.

So sorry to hear about the diagnosis. Our golden retriever was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 5. We had no idea he'd been having small seizures until he had a grand mal one.

I highly recommend doing the meds. It helps them out immensely and reduces if not eliminates the seizures. The vet may put your lab on a high dosage at first, at which point he will probably have extremely low energy and sleep all the time. But you should slowly back off on the meds until you reach a point where your dog is happy and alert, but also not seizing.

Our golden was on these epilepsy meds his entire life until he died of plain old age at the ripe old age of 14.

Best of luck to you!

I'm not sure about the side effects. My friend's dog has been on meds for years and as far as I can tell the dog is happy and healthy. It certainly gave her a much better quality of life. The seizures were awful to see.
