I'm some sort of a non-theist, and I find myself mostly tolerant of religions and religious people with the exception of most sects of Christianity, which I feel are constantly being shoved down my throat. I was wondering if any other free thinkers had similar experiences with any particular religion and if you might be willing to share? Or am I all alone in this?

Let me further explain, the reason I find myself less tolerant of Christianity is because I feel that that is the one religion where people are always yelling at me for my beliefs and belittling me and condemning me to hell for not agreeing with them.

Another detail... I don't dislike Christians, I have many Christian friends. I simply find myself losing patience with many in that religion before I lose patience with those in other religions because the only people who have ever belittled my beliefs were those of a Christian faith. Yes I read my post before I hit submit, excuse me for having an opinion.

I used to be a pretty hardcore Christian so I guess I tolerate them more then most because I know where they are coming from. I personally love Buddhists because they don't start problems with anyone. They just live and love. When is the last time you saw a buddhist strap a bomb to themselves and blow something up. I just hate how Christians/Muslim moderates act like the people who do that aren't really Christians/muslims....the truth is they are the ones who take the bible and Quaran 100 percent literally.

I'm a Buddhist and I am pretty accepting of other belief systems. I know that psychologically, people are hard-wired to want to belief in some sort of deity and even though I don't, I respect that. The only time I have trouble with any religion is when someone tells me my beliefs are wrong or tries to convert me. Then, I limit my dislike to the person and not the belief system. I do not respect those who are intolerant of others or who feel like they are the only people who can be right but I don't think this comes from their religion. Religion goes wrong in the interpretation not the dogma.

I much agree I am wiccan and recently I have had some "christian" on here attacking me through email claiming that I am evil my ways are evil quoting random scriptures and blah blah ... tellin me that only the blood of christ can save me ...
I have repidily tryed being nice and telling her that nothing she says can move my choice to use my right to my own thinking and beliefs and that we all have free will for a reason and that I was not bashing her or condeming her therefore she could keep it to herself ... yet nothing I have said has simply given her the hint to SHUT UP and leave me the hell alone ...
It seems in christians minds they feel the ever saking need to constantly shove it down your thorat kinda like brain washing but it dont nor will it work on me ...

While I charge into the fray when science is being attacked, I am tolerant in ways that surprise some people. I open doors for elderly nuns (priests usually manage without me), I make no comments when they are workjing in their official capacity, and I let people have their beliefs when I am at work or visiting. I will, however, defend my own turf when someone decides to drop in and start trying to tell me how much better their beliefs are than mine. Or when the same thing is tried through politics.

I feel like I am more tolerant of other peoples beliefs because I do not insulate myself from other's beliefs. A lot of organized religions teach their followers to stay away from the heathens (or even kill them) lest they be cast into hell. This type of ignorance can only lead to intolerance. Because of my belief that finding God is a personal journey that everyone must take on their own, I am very tolerant of people finding their own way.

I see some at different religions too that have effected me, yet those take my breath away.

I feel that I am an agnostic although I'm hoping that the Christian doctrine has some truth to it. I am tolerant of all religions other than Islam as, I believe, is a corrupt and foul religion that preaches death, descent and slavery.

I understand what you are saying. I try my hardest to be open and understanding of everyone's beliefs, but I do tend to get my hackles up around Christians every now and then. Why? I think because I was part of the religion for so long. They made me feel bad then (because no matter how hard you try, you can not be perfect enough) and they still make me feel bad.

What's your view on Islam. Some of the translations and views of some Clerics is you convert or you die. Can you live with that point of view. I'm not talking about dying in tell at God's hand, I'm talking by their hand, right on the spot like you see on the Web with the hostages they take and behead.

Christianity doesn't do that, but some day you're going to face an angry mob of Islamics near you and they will want an answer on the spot. Do you get down and praise Allah and Muhammad or do you stand and hold your own ground.

Unfortunately I think I have a lower tolerance for Catholics and evangelicals, probably because my well meaning Mom shoved Catholicism down my throat for most of my life. I find that the Catholic Church teaches religious intolerance. Buddhism (I converted) is teaching me to let go of my anger and regain my tolerance.
