I have a Canon GL1 (oldie, i know, but i love it) and the electronic 16:9 setting SUCKS. It noticeably reduces the quality.
How else could I record in 16:9?

Hey I have a GL2 :-) (sorry couldnt resist) so I'm in a similar situation. Century optics makes a 16:9 anamorphic lens adapter, which I've heard (and seen) works very well, and you could probably find one cheap on eBay. As a note of reference, the electronic 16:9 on the gl2 isn't that bad, but that's probably due in part to the higher resolution sensors. Hope this helps!

You're not going to get good wide screen with out a wide screen 1980 x 1020 matrix array.

The GL1 undercut on pixels (333,333 required for SDTV) with 270,000 pixel chips in a 720 x 480 ratio You're trying to spread that out wide, using either anamprophics (making square pixels rectangles) or cropping (going 720 x 300).

Neither option is going to work unless you want letter box, for you'll have to stretch the image out no matter what.

Besides getting a camera with a 16:9 lense? No other way.

Sorry!

You could always edit it later on though. Just be mindful of how you frame what you are recording

Record 4:3 and then crop the top and bottom during editing.
