We came home from an overnight stay with in laws, and the male puppy had expired. We think he crawled behind the mother and she went to sleep on him and suffocated him. He had no physical injury apparent. I found him behind and beneath the mother. He was separated from the other 2 females. We were crushed beyond description. My wife cried for 30 minutes. Does this type of thing happen?

I really don't know how some of you come up with these answers. I am sorry Joseph but you are very wrong. Shih Tzu are very good mothers they will never hurt one of their puppies. This sort of thing about weakest link kind of selection is so wrong.

I also breed Shih Tzus. I would never went on an over night trip and left them alone with out someone watching them. I always check the puppies to make sure they are where they belong. Mine are always crawling behind the mother. I am so sorry for you loss and a sad lesson learned here. When you decide to have puppies it is your responsibility to make sure they are taken care of. Going on an over night trip was not a good thing. I have stayed up many of nights with my dogs. When you have a litter you must stay with that litter until they are sold or at least big enough so you don't have to worry about them getting behind the mother. My dog will also cover her pups up. I am always going in there uncovering the puppies. Once again I am sorry for your loss. But never go on an over night trip and leave your dogs alone like that. Anything could have happen. I have had a case where someone broke in and took the puppies while they were gone. If you have to go on an over night trip have someone stay with the dog and her puppies.

Sorry to be so harsh here, but people have to learn that when you decide to breed a dog you give up your life for 8 long weeks. If you not willing to do that then you don't breed your dogs.

I know it must hurt to lose such a tiny thing. It does happen from time to time. The mothermay accendintly lay on the pup and not know she is on it, since it is so small and weak and she may be occupied with the rest to notic the pups distress or it crawled behind her in attempt to nurse. It has happend to a litter of my own. I always rearranged them infront of the mother and a few times i gave her a bigger bed. I am sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry for your loss. The pup may have just been weak. Sometimes they die with no visible cause of death. This is the hardest part of breeding dogs. Hope the other 2 do well. We had a new litter of chihuahuas born last night. The last one was born dead. I tried to resuciate it with no luck. The firt pup was born weak and barely breathing but I worked on it for a long time and now it is doing fine.

At this age pups want 2 issues more often than not - food and warm temperature. they couldn't generate their personal warmth, so that you need to keep him warmth. Have him in a container, on a warmth, properly coated warm water bottle - yet make certain that is properly coated, and not in any respect truly warm or he will be in difficulty. He needs bottling each and every 2 hours (i'm hoping you understand what you've taken on the following) utilising puppy formula milk. it is for sale. i wouldn't, at this aspect, take him in on your vet till you difficulty about him. i assume you've checked him out? you'll want to pooh and pee him the way mum would have done. that is necessary. Use a humid cloth/cotton wool and wipe him in circles, like his mum would have licked him - peeing in men is oftentimes no issue, besides the undeniable fact that the poohing will be. again, vet, once you've difficulty. Stuff an previous sock to placed alongside him - sounds daft, besides the undeniable fact that it is organization for a singleton puppy. you are able to initiate weaning him onto solids through 3 weeks. initiate with warmed milk (no longer cows - b itch replacer or goats milk) and then on to mushed up puppy food. solid success, desire all of them live to inform the tale.

This is quite common. Sometimes it's an inexperienced mom, or she is suddenly startled by something, sometimes the mother knows there is something wrong with the puppy and sometimes it's just pure accident. you can't watch them all the time unfortunately... it's just part of breeding and life. sorry to hear about the little guy. good luck with the other 2!

I hate to sound harsh but yes... it does. This is one of the hardest parts of breeding.

This is also going to sound harsh but it's something to consider if you are going to breed again. You need to be prepared to lose all the pups and the mother. It can happen. You need to weigh that risk. Is it worth losing your pet for whatever reason you are breeding her?

I'm sorry you lost the pup.
