I heard a report on NPR today about how much the migrant workers sent home last year. I understand the necessity of hiring migrant workers in certain businesses, but I just don't see how so many Americans wouldn't want to earn some of that 45 billion dollars. Please don't write insulting or ignorant comments, thanks.

one thing my question is after : why isn't our government doing anything substantial to at least make a small portion of that money stay in th U.S? I mean, the way it is right now it's an expensive form of foreign aid!!!

There is a move to keep do something about that. Putting a tax on the monies sent out. I would THINK that there should be some way to verify that the money being sent has been properly taxed to begin with (not payment under the table) and that there was some sort of fees that went back to the states that it is being sent from since they are the ones hit with much of the burdens of paying for the needs of these people within this country (medical, food, housing, etc).

The way that it is now, they send out $1000 and pay about $10 to do it.

It costs more money to send money within the United States than it costs to send it to Mexico. So it is something that has been spoken of within gov. but not sure when they are going to address the problem.

Try this: If every one of those Migrants paid for a Green Card, it would be over 18 BILLION dollars...that might have some impact on our deficit. I think that we should shut down the Western Union lines between here and Mexico...I bet a few of them might actually go home.

Just think how much of that will come back to the US as tourist revenue. Surely the migrants will bring their families to Disneyland when they come back next picking season!
