alright. i've known my friend 4 11 years since we were 5, i haven't seen him 4 the past year cuz i changed schools. but now we're hanging out more, we spent last saturday hiking around. as we walked home he put his arm around my waist & held my hand. I was a bit surprised but ok with it. when we got home he still held my hand, & we sat on the couch he layed his head on my lap, so i stroked his hair. then he sat up & leaned me onto his lap. when he was leaving he gave me a long hug in a "different" way & said he'd call me later. he never did. but 2 wks later i got an email asking me if we were just friends. i know he's not dating & he still "likes" me. is he waiting 4 a better time??? i don't know. he doesn't seem the type 2 cheat or use.

what you should do is really talk to this person, i mean, he was your friend for 11 years so you should be able to talk to him, face to face, find out what really going on in his head and then you will be able to move from there

you weren't used, cause you really didnt do all that much. he probably just isnt sure if wants to be in a relationship. i mean 11 years of being a friend into a relationship is a big change, and has to be thought about.
just talk to him, and let him tell you when he's ready. or better yet, tell him how you feel.

He's probably really confused about what he wants and what you want. He likes you but he doesn't want to ruin anything. He thinks you would be willing to go farther into a dating relationship, but he doesn't know if he should be too forward or if that's what you really want.
