I am thinking about getting a 3" lift on my 2000 Jeep Wrangler Sahara. What is a good tire size for such a lift? I don't want something too big or too wide. Please help. THANKS!

By the way, the rims that are on the Jeep now are 15", standard Jeep rims. Would I have to buy new rims to fit the bigger tires? Also, if this helps, I will occasionally be mud bogging with the Jeep.

Ok you are building an offroad rig right? There are several things to remember when upgrading your Jeep. First, the only reason we lift a vehicle is so we can fit bigger tires. Tires are the single most important thing that affects the performance of your jeep. Putting larger tires on a jeep can damage driveline components if they are not strong enough. Sometimes if you start with tires you replace axles, joints, transmissions, motors and etc. The bigger tires you put on the bigger decrease in HP you will feel. If you have the six cylinder then you shouldn't have much trouble with tire sizes under 35. You can get tires in many sizes. Narrow tires work good on pavement wide tires work good in the mud. You need to base the width of your tires on how much time you will be spending on the rd. vs. in the mud. If you want a play toy 38 x 14.50 inch tires seem to be the ideal size for a jeep (thats pretty much off road only). If you want a good looking street Jeep aggressive looking 31's would look good. Adjust the amount of lift to the size of tires that you will need/want. if you will be mudding half of the time get (38-31)/2+31= roughly 35" x (14.5-8)/2+8= roughly 12" tires. Then get the amount of suspension or body lifts that you need to fit the tires.
The rim width affectsthe way your tires look. If you have a narrow rim your tires will look bigger (more baloon like) Wider rims will put more of the tire on the ground enhancing performance and the feel of bumps in the highway. Big tires seem to get a mind of their own; they can change the direction of your car more (than smaller tires) when driving over ruts, potholes curbs and etc at speed.
p.s. for light offroading 32 x 11.50 inch tires would work pretty good, just don't try to show up the big boys. lol

Trust me when I say this. Do not put the tires before the lift because they will look very small. The Jeep Wrangler Rubicons come with 31 inch tires and you might already have 31 inch. Plus you will be 3 inches higher so 31 is WAY to small. The perfect size would be 33 inches tall and 12.5 inches wide. But just incase thats do big do not go any smaller that 32 inches tall and 11.5 inches wide.
Go to the Jeep website and look at the Rubicon and thats 31 inch tires. You can also google search for a Jeep with a 3 inch lift and go by that.

You can fit 31s in there, but if you offroad you will stuff the tires in the wheelwells. If you want to go bigger, consider getting a $200 Budget Boost, which will give you a little more suspension clearance. The 31s will then clear easily, and you may be able to put 32s under there (but again you'll stuff them when you offroad). Also keep in mind the strength of your axle and the size of your engine. If you have a 2.5L engine, the bigger tires will cost you in power and highway speed...

i agree with the guy above me go with 32s they are the exact size your looking for. 33s will be too big 35s are way to big those only fit when you have a 5.5 or 6inch lift so ya go with 32s. also pro comp tires are good because they last a long time and are good offroad too and are cheap, you can also go with the goodyear mtr's i have those on my rubicon and i love them but they get expensive when you start to get into the bigger sizes.

On page 165 of my handy dandy Quadratec Essentials catalog it shows that a 32x11.50 is the ideal tire for your ride. Now with that size tire your will need to upgrade your wheels to a 15x8.
Here's the link to Quadratec below. Its a great mag for reference for toys for your ride.

OMG, first its BFGoodrich not wrench.
31 would leave a huge gap
35 wont fit.
33 will be tight
32 will look just right.
32x10.5 would keep you from sticking out the sides too much.
