"Jesus said to them again, 'Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.' And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, 'Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.'" - John 20:21-23

John 20:23 Jesus tells the apostles the apostles had successors who had successors... the penance is just to do something holy are sins are already atoned by the sacrafice of Jesus but the penance is just a work to atone for our sinfulness and the hail marys are just a stero-type a priest usally tells you some good-work to do or a certain prayer...
The reason we go to confess to the priest is that he will forgive are sin but only God takes our sins away plus the priest will usally tell you to make good of the sin for example if you murdered someone he'd tell you to go to the police before he can absolve you...
... The catechism will notably note passages in the bible that the doctrine is from ...
I'm sorry if you have a problem with our faith and I hope God will show you that we aren't evil pagans..

I guess I'm more of a "new aged" post-Vatican Catholic, but I go to confession because I know the priest can give me good advice, that Jesus knows I'm sorry, and it really helps put a lid on things from the past. I atone with Hail Mary's because I believe she can help me, not because I feel that is "the prayer of atonement."
- When I was little I made up sins, too. lol. I think confession is for older people that can identify their sins and the need to change.

The power of forgiving sins was the very first thing Jesus gave to his apostles after he rose from the dead.
Joh 20:19 Now when it was late the same day, the first of the week, and the doors were shut, where the disciples were gathered together, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst and said to them: Peace be to you.
Joh 20:20 And when he had said this, he shewed them his hands and his side. The disciples therefore were glad, when they saw the Lord.
Joh 20:21 He said therefore to them again: Peace be to you. As the Father hath sent me, I also send you.
Joh 20:22 When he had said this, he breathed on them; and he said to them: Receive ye the Holy Ghost.
Joh 20:23 Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them: and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained.
This was the main reason Jesus died ... to make possible the forgiveness of sins.
And sins are not just automatically forgiven, as many protestants like to claim.
Contrition, plus authentic repentance is required for forgiveness. And no ordinary man properly understands how this works, without some serious coaching and assistance. Jesus certainly knew this.
Protestants conveniently ignore all this simply because their strange doctrines are biased against priests.
I'm betting there will be a whole lot of weeping and gnashing of teeth on judgment day, when those who arbitrarily discarded this most fundamental biblical teaching, are called to account.

The Catholic Curch cannot forgive sin...No man can....
There is absolutly nothing in the bible that supports that we must atone for sin by saying Hail Mary's...
Here are a few scriptures that affirm that God Alone forgives sin.....
Colossians 1:13,14 "For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of His dear Son,who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins. "
Ephesians 1:7 "He is so rich in kindness and grace that He purchased our freedom with the blood of His Son and forgave our sins.."
SALVATION
We can't save ourselves either , we can't earn it, we don't deserve it...It comes from God's mercy and love.....

You're right! Only by the washing away of our sins by the shed Blood of Jesus Christ can we be forgiven of our sins. The rc church is sadly leading millions of people astray! I should know...I USED to be one of them!
