Jamaica is not part of the Bahamas at all.
I grew up in Jamaica and I have been to the Bahamas so my take is quite simple: The Bahamas is VERY Americanized. Atlantis is an incredible place but the main problem with the Bahamas is that it is a large number of islands. With the exchange rate, it's ike being in the US.
Jamaica on the other hand is one island and so much easier to traverse. The exchange rate of $66 JA to $1 US also allows your money to stretch further. As for crime, Bahamas is better, but just like NY, there are places you don't go to, the same goes for Jamaica.
Tourist cities like MoBay, Ocho Rios, Negril and Port Antonio have lower crime rates than the rest of the island.

I did not feel safe in Jamaica. The country is so poor and unemployment is so high that even the police are corrupt. We were warned not to take any taxi unless it had an official license plate. Others will say they are official and take you to the jungle and hold you until you give them lots of money... or worse. All of the really nice resorts there have guards at the gates armed with AK 47s. I am not kidding.
The Bahamas are a group of islands and cays, pronounced keys, over 100 in all. I have only been to Grand Bahama Island and it is beautiful!! I felt very safe there. I am still cautious about pickpockets and such but we had a wonderful time.

wow, the second person is SO funny lol. but I'd say go for Jamaica. they're both really nice with the most beautiful beaches and the water is so beautiful. if you're smart, you wouldn't be fazed by rumors, so feel safe. if you're laid back and all about having fun then you shouldn't feel threatened unless you really get yourself into trouble, which in any country is pretty hard unless you really are a vulnerable person. but i recommend Jamaica as my family's from there :)

Jamaica is considered to be part of the bahamas, so i say y limit urself. u should go to the bahamas!!!!
