Thank you for the quick clear responses. My apologies but I wasn't as specific as I should have been in my question.

how do I add new application icons to the dock? I now understand how to move existing ones around the dock or off it but would like to add new applications I've downloaded onto the dock

thx

when you move an icon on the dock, it becomes locked in place!

permanently! (until you throw it off the dock)

Hello newmacmini,

Click and hold down on an icon on the dock. You should be able to drag that icon to a different position on the dock. The other icons will dance out of the way. The only difference is the far right of the dock (to the right of the little vertical line) which is only for files. The icons to the left of that line are applications.

Of course you know that you can drag the icons off of the dock if you want to get rid of them. They disappear in a puff of smoke. Of course, you aren't deleting the applications or files these are only alias icons. The real programs and files are inside your Macintosh HD.

Getting back to the dock; there are programs that you can download that customize the docks even more, but most of them are hacks. Check them out at VersionTracker:

Best of luck to you.

you will no longer be able to legally set up Mac OS X on a non-Apple computing gadget. Doing so violates Apple's license contract. That mentioned, there have been some efficient installations of it. agencies that have tried doing it have been sued out of corporation, yet probably the subject you will have is that Apple would refuse to help you in case you had any issues. I take exception on your assertion that Macs value too plenty, besides the undeniable fact that. My adventure has been that as quickly as you purchase a Mac you purely pay up front for the expenditures you land up paying via the years for a laptop, given which you do no longer would desire to spend fairly some money afterwards for enhancements and utility. and because you have indicated you're already paying for a laptop with domicile windows, threat is you have desperate on a kind and a kind. in case you go with a Hackintosh, you will would desire to purchase a laptop that has been familiar to paintings with OS X. back to sq. one?

To add an application, all you have to do is click on the application and drag it to the dock. So for example, If I wanted to add Firefox to the dock, I would go to my Applications folder, click on Firefox.app and drag it to the dock.

Drag and drop, baby. (I'm just simplifying the other guy's answer.)
