this guy says he is going to give me a gift for v-day, and he tells me what it costs. (just for reference guys, this is a bad idea) for christmas he gave me a teddy bear and once again tells me and what it costs. last time i just said thank you a bunch of times. what would be the proper response when a guy (not bf or even crush) does this?

It's rude to tell people how much you spend on buying their gift. It generally takes a person who cares about money to talk about money. Watch out for him being transactional - i.e. expecting 'something' back from you for the amount of money he spends on you.

If the gift gets a bit too expensive, it's not impolite to not accept the gift, stating that you're uncomfortable accepting such expensive/tremendous gift. He might get upset with you, but don't give in; it's a trap. If there's an ulterior motive, it raises the probability of him getting upset with you, as well.

He must think that women like guys for their money. He's demonstrating that he has a lot of money by buying you things and by telling you how much they're worth. He sounds like a bit of a loser as you guys aren't even going out. However, you keep accepting the gifts, so you must like him a bit. Good luck!

Thank you if you want it. No thank you if you don't. If you accept presents from him, knowing he has other motives, and you have a boyfriend that's sort of leading him on. So be up front with him. He deserves that. And you need to see his reaction when you tell him how you feel.

I agree that it's unusual for him to tell you how much he paid. Perhaps the others are right that he's trying to impress you with his money. Or perhaps, for him, he is trying to express to you how much he cares about you with how much or how little he spends on you. I kind of feel sorry for this guy who seems to think that relationships are so much about money.

If he is going to be rude enough to tell you how much something is cut him off when he starts telling you and just flat-out tell him that it is not proper etiquette to tell someone how much you paid for something.

Well, I don't think he should have told you what it cost, but no matter just say thank you, like you have.

I would say and I quote,
" You paid how much for this?"
guy responds...
" Did you keep the receipt?"
guy responds.
"May I have it?"
