Do you lift heavy weights or small weights to build muscle? I'm trying to build muscle in my arms.

To build long, lean muscles, you want to do more repitions with lighter weights. This builds what's called "slow twitch" , or endurance muscle. To get bulkier muscles, do less repetitions with heavier weights this builds fast-twitch, or power muscle. Seeing as how your name is "ballerina"...I'm assuming you would want to do the former.

increasing the size of a muscle is more dependant on the diet and creating a caloric excess. if you are new to resistance training you should be able to gain some muscle pretty easily.

you want to focus on the eccentric (lowering) portion of an exercise, this causes the most amount of trauma to skeletal muscle. you also want the total time under tension for each set to be from 45-60 seconds. so if each rep takes 6 seconds to complete you need to do 8-10 reps.
