Depending on the year, a place like auto zone can hook up their computer to your car and tell you why the light keeps coming on. If they can't do it then the dealer can. Auto Zone does it free. There is a reason that the check engine light is coming on, it doesn't just do it for fun. You can disconnect the battery cable for 1/2 hour or so to reset the computer and the light may or may not stay off. A lot of times when the check engine goes on sometimes and off other times it is an oxygen sensor going bad.

could be a number of things. i have seen the check engine light flash on cars that had a bad coil pack not giving spark (which is a common problem on our cars...and there was a recall on them).

and if the light has come on, there is a code stored in the memory. it doesnt matter if it is on now or not, if it's been on before, there is a code stored.

if you go to the forums on vwvortex.com you can create a post and ask if there is anyone in your area with a VAG-COM (vw's diagnostic computer) that would be willing to help you out. us dubheads are a good bunch of people, i bet someone would be happy to help you out.

good luck!

What do you mean they couldn't tell? Was it a secret? If the light is, or has been on, there are error codes. Go have the codes read and you will know what the problem is.

The light goes on, and stores a code in memory when any of the systems monitored by the computer returns a signal outside the range it expects to see.

i own a repair shop, and if its flashing on and off that's called an intermittent signal ,and its trying to tell you that is has a sensor going all the way out on it ,if you,ll take it to auto zone they can scan the computer and tell you which one it is,and then you,ll know,i wouldn't buy anything for it until i knew for sure what it is causing this, replacing parts can be expensive, especially if you don't need them, good luck,i hope this help,s.

There are many sensors connected to these "Idiot lights" Go to Auto Zone and have them put the meter on it free. This is not spam.

Do you overfill your gas tank? Gas in the fuel filter can cause the check engine light to come on and it can decrease your car's performance.
