In order to know why education is important, we have to know first what education is. EDUCATION is a noun composed of a verb and a suffix (educate + ion). So what is EDUCATE?

ETYMOLOGY (history of the word):

Middle English, to rear, from Latin educatus, past participle of educare to rear, educate, from educere to lead forth -- more at EDUCE.

Transitive verb (a verb that requires an object) and intransitive (verb that does not require an object)

MEANING:

1) A: to provide schooling for. B: to train by formal instruction and supervised practice especially in a skill, trade, or profession.

2) A: to develop mentally, morally, or aesthetically especially by instruction. B: to provide with information.

3) To persuade or condition to feel, believe, or act in a desired way.

SYNONYM: Teach.

Well, taking into consideration all the positive aspects of the word: to lead, provide skills, develop mentally, morally, etc., persuade, etc. we can easily make the connection between education and knowledge. "Knowledge is a virtue", so said one of the first teacher, (Socrates, Aristae, Plato).

Without education, ignorance will be rampant, and there will be no development, advancement:

1. No cures for disease. So people will suffer.

2. No inventions to help us live an easier life.

3. No culture, heritage, wisdom to be passed over from one generation to another.

4. No internet for you to pose your question to millions of people in the four corners of the world. So you wouldn't be able to know whether education is important or not.

5. With no education, you will not be able to indulge yourself into intellectual discussion because you lack the knowledge.

And the list goes on and on...

Education has always been, is and will always be important. Do not let the ease of education and the availability thereof in this country blind you and make you take it for granted. Look around. There are countries who are hundreds of years lagging behind because of lack of education, suffering from diseases, famines, etc.

Education is the backbone of survival. Animals in the wild educate their kids, in their own ways, how to survive.

No great civilization in the old times, neither is now was built on ignorance, but knowledge communicated through education.

Your question should be why isn't education important. Education is very important, mainly because without an education you will not be able to get a good job and support yourself/family. Without education this world would be filled with knowledgeless people that can't tell left from right. The world would not be able to work without education.
