Check out SuSe Linux. It's very friendly to those used to windows and with a little computer know how.
This build has great hardware support and even tech support but you might have to pay for the tech support. I'm not sure.
You can download it free from their site or buy a SuSe for dummies book which comes with the CD. I picked up the book and CD for $35. at borders.

Linux great if you want to make the system your own with all the tweaks and such using command lines when you want to get more robust operation but is fine right out of the box too, Ubuntu is popular for it's ease of use interface (just Linux based system with GUI for ease of use, those new to Linux may find they are more comfortable with this)

As much as I would like to suggest Ubuntu, it will not run on that machine. Ubuntu specs require at least a 1Ghz processor and 256 Mb Ram. My suggestion is to find an older distro of Linux or an earlier version of Ubuntu. Or perhaps you can find an older copy of Windows 98 for sale in your local classifieds!

Do check out UBUNTU. It has a graphical interface just like WINDOWS. It's free and all the software that you will ever need is free too.
I have tried other Linux versions including some that I have paid for and finally settled on this one.
If you have 256MB of RAM get the full version. If less get XUBUNTU.

Word of warning to the answerer with "free" XP - if it is an OEM copy of XP (came preloaded on the PC with an OEM license) - you are not licensed to use it; it is specifically licensed to the equiment manufacturer hence O E M - Original Equipment Manufacturer and can only be legally used on the machine it came with. Try reading your EULA (if you actually have one).

Try www.firefox.com
This OS is small enough to operate lean and fast...
there are extra plug ins that are also free if you need them...
It also protects you while you surf...
Good Luck,
