Most dogs will be protective of their owners under extreme circumstances. It's their natural instinct to protect their pack. I have a Rottie who is very gentle but always alerts me when people are near the house. However he growls at anyone who he cannot identify. Most deep chested breeds are this way. Even Pit Bull that have such a bad reputation simply because people use them in dog fights for their jaw strength. Every Pit I have met has been a big baby and friendly as can be but I wouldn't recommend buying a pit because it's bad buisness to buy a mixed breed. Beagles are great too. They have a keen sense of sight, smell, and auditory senses and will definetly alert you of any suspicious behaviour. It's all a matter of preference. As long as you establish a good rapport the dog will be devoted to protecting you.

Any large black dog who barks is an excellent deterrent. Going to the local shelter and getting a black lab or mix is fine. Buying a dog from the herding or working group and training it to "be mean" is a great way to get sued. I have a Malinois and will probably be getting a Dutch shepherd this summer, but they are NOT good as pets for the average owner. Anyone who tells you that you don't have to train a Doberman, pit bull, German shepherd, etc is STUPID and WRONG. An untrained dog is more likely to bite you or a child than a burglar.

There are specific breeds that are breed to become aggressive - but any dog will protect it's family and and it's owner. A german shepard, rotweiller, doberman, all fine dogs, great family dogs and very protective!

My redbone hound is as protective as I can get without a trained guard dog. I have to watch him around strangers. My black lab is a great guard dog, but my bloodhound, well you could trip over him as he sleeps in front of the door!

it all depends on what you want from the dog. there are all kinds of different guard dogs for different things. there are a few that i really like. 1- kuvasz they are from Turkey. 2- rottweiler ( but often miss understood and mis treated and handled) you need insurance for this one in most places for housing/renting.if you have never owned a rottweiler before it is best to start with a female as the males are very stubborn and bull head and just plain boyish in behavior but fun like to sit on your feet.etc... 3-it is a (leopard stock and guard dog) they are mainly from Tennessee. these dogs are in the curr family. i did forget their name but it is definitely a leopard stock and guard dog. i have owned all three dogs the are great but i cant pick one over the other. you just need to really under stand what you want understand them,do your research well. its not a statement your making its a buddy and Friend. also find local dog show and ask around don't make a fast decisions they are with you for at least 13 years. just study alot and ask about them its really the only way. and your the one who is responsible

I think really any large dog is good for protection. But I think all the mastiffs (particularly the bull mastiff), rottweilers, and german shepherds make the best dogs for protection. And you don't have to train your dog to be aggressive for it to be protective of you and your home. It is in their instincts to be protective of their home. And even if they are the friendliest dog in the world, just their size alone and deep bark will keep strangers away. I think these dogs are good for protection, but also make GREAT family pets when well socialized and trained. I love em!!

i would normally suggest a pitbull because they are great guard dogs and excellent family dogs but only for experienced dog owners. for a novice i would suggest a german shepherd because they are EXCELLENT guard dogs and are usually good with kids. they are also highly intelligent and one of the easier dog breeds to train. although, as with all dogs, be sure you socialize it and walk it often so it doesnt turn crazy because if you lock your dog up in the house too much, thats how they turn aggresive. also, get it as a puppy because puppies are easier to train and if it bites you can teach it not to bite while its small instead of when its big. also, i have a jack russell terrier and he is also a great guard dog except he may not intimidate much intruders because he is a small breed lol.

Komondors are very devoted members of their family, the Komondor is loving and loyal. They are naturally a great guardian, which makes him good for guard dog work, however his guarding instincts can turn into aggressiveness, as he tends to protect everything he believes is his.

Anything large, people are inheritly afraid of large breed dogs. You do not need a known "mean" dog for good protection. Its all in the training of any dog. Good luck

German shepard, rottie, pitbull, dobie, Akita....basically any dog that has a deep aggressive bark. Most ppl will think twice b4 entering a home/yard with a dog that is aggressively barking. Doesn't have to be a 'bad' dog to do that. I had a Lab retriever that had a very deep, mean bark but ppl that knew him knew he was just barking and would lick ya to death.

Check the general laws in your state. Here, if someone breaks into your house and your dog bites the robber, you are fined and your dog can be put down.
If you want to protect yourself, get a lisence to carry and get a gun.
