Windows machines are cheaper, are more customizable and have a familiar interface. Because so many people use them (over 85% of computer users) they are also the target of viruses and spyware. With a little third party software you can secure your computer. check out download.com for good free titles.
Apple costs more but has similar hardware. It can run windows xp or vista in a dual boot config or side by side with parallels software. Macs have less viruses, have one mouse button, arent as customizable as a pc but do have some excellent software. The ilife software is excellent and it works well.
It is mostly personal preference and budget that will decide, good luck!

Apple's hardware is on the cutting edge, and their OS X operating system is years ahead of what Microsoft just served up with Vista. Apple's computers can now run Windows if you so choose, so it is clear that your best choice would be an Apple.
