Conservation means sacrifice...something that many won't do.

However you can do things to help the environment during winter.

Reduce energy needs...don't heat the home unnecessarily. Reduce carbon emissions by heating to room temperature or slightly below while you're at home and lower thermostat when away. Conserve by turning off lights and appliances that aren't directly benefiting anyone at home. Use an electric blanket at night time and lower the thermostat while you're sleeping. When hot water is needed don't run it unnecessarily and consume only what's needed. When it snows...don't use power equipment, use a shovel. When using an automobile, remove frost with a scrapper and avoid running the engine for long idle periods to defrost. Wear a sweater at home and lower the thermostat a couple degrees. Close off rooms that aren't needed and do not heat them. Don't heat a garage area or non-essential rooms that people don't live in. Close the door promptly when going outside. Dry laundry on racks or lines instead of a gas/electric dryer. When washing dishes...don't constantly run hot water, fill a section with warm water when dishes have accumulated and wash and rinse together.

There are LOTS of things you could be doing right now.

1) Do an inventory of ALL the cleaning products you have in your house and get rid of all that are not "Earth Friendly" . This would mean all Petrolieum, Chemical and Fragranced products.

2) Stop using (and get rid of) all fragranced products that you use on your clothing, body and hair. They are not only bad for others to breathe but they are bad for you to put on your skin and or clothing.

3) Do not use any Dryer Sheets in your laundry as they pollute the air as well as your body. They are very toxic.

4) Do not use any chemical air "fresheners" as they pollute the air as well as your body. Especially the "plug - in" type. They are Toxic Chemicals NOT air cleaners!

5) Join or start a local FreeCycle . By doing this you can re-cycle just about anything and stop filling up the landfills with good stuff that others can make good use of.

6) Compost... Start a compost bin and even if you don't garden, you can give it away to others who do Organic gardening in exchange for some of their Organic Veggies or fruit.

7) Do not use any Fertilizers or Pesticides that are not organic. Chemical products are ALL TOXIC and end up in our water, our fish and our eco-system as well as ultimately in our bodies.

8) Do not allow vehicles to idle in the cold weather. This produces a lot of toxic fumes in the air which cold air will hold close to the ground and you and your neighbors will be breathing.

9) Call your local 'Community Extension Office" and ask them for information on how to re-cycle.

10) Always ask yourself if you are part of the problem or part of the solution and you will come up with a list of your own things that you can contribute and teach others to do to help the environment.

This is only a short list but a good place to start. I am sure you will find lots of other ways to help the environment starting in your own home.

Thanks for pitching in !

DO things like hand out note cards to people giving tips on the enviroment. or spend less time on the internet and more time picking up trash on the highway

Build snowmen. They make the environment look nice. Or, get off the computer and sit in the dark for a while. Or, ski wherever you go and leave the car at home. It's not just about what you DO; not doing things is just as important.

Stay indoors and start making posters for Earth Day.
Find out if your community has a recycling center where you can volunteer.

Come to my house and protest the wearing of clothes. All you have to do is get naked and do what comes naturally
