I have a five month old daschund whom I love more than life itself! The problem is that I feel his normal puppy nipping and biting has escalated over the two months I have owned him. His nipping and biting is becoming ferocious and he growls when he does it. At first I simply tried replacing my hand or ankle with an appropriate chew toy but he won't accept toys when he jumping and lunging at my hand or foot. I then tried yelling ow whenever he bit me and leaving the room for a few minutes. This was useless as his nipping and agressive biting has increased. I have finally resorted to holding his snout and saying "no biting" very firmly. When I do this he growls and as soon as i let my hand go he lunges at me again. I really love my puppy but his nipping is so bad. I work from home and he has plenty of play time every day. Anyone have any advice from a frazzled mom?

My puppy has a problem with biting too, when she bites when i'm doing something she doesn't like to her, i don't stop the unpleasant feeling and she learns biting doesn't help. And if i'm petting her and she bites me i stop the pleasant feeling and she learns biting doesn't work once again. If this suggestion doesn't work, when your dog bites you, pick it up and give it a big hug (like a time-out) keeping its mouth out of the way of any body parts. Count to ten until she calms down, if she tries to bite you, start over your counting.Must have ten seconds of calm to be let out of time-out.Holding her mouth closed makes your hands a bad thing near her face if you need to do something by her face, she would think you were about to punish her and close her mouth.Whatever your strategy, keep consistency, or else she will not understand. Good luck with your puppy! Teaching her not to bite might take awhile.

I would suggest clicker training in combination with the things you were doing, as well as basic obedience training. Obedience training will teach the dog that you are dominant. Sometimes nipping is a test of boundaries and their place socially. I would also suggest getting a variety of eatible nylabones and figure out which he likes most.

After associating the click with treat and praise (this usually only takes a day or so) you're set up to train most behaviors. To train a puppy to stop nipping:
-Throughout the day click everytime your puppy is chewing something appropriate (bone, toys, etc.). Make sure to reward and praise after the click!
-Everytime your puppy bites you, let your hand go limp and replace your hand with a nylabone and click once its in his mouth. Once he starts accepting the bone, click when he bites down on it. The click when he takes the bone, then click when he chews it, etc.
-If for some reason he wont even take the nylabone (there are so many flavors out there I'm sure you can find one he likes more than your hand), try a puppy teether (available at most petstores) with peanutbutter (organic sugar-free) on/in it, or Target sells an AKC brand of puppy toys which are soft that you can try (maybe he doesnt like the hard feeling of teethers).

If you cant seem to remedy his behavior in a few weeks, I would speak to a behaviorist or trainer and see what they can do. Goodluck!

One you will have to be consistent and it will take time before you notice a big change. Two, replace the toys with small rawhides or chewable treats. Three, yelling at his is not enough if your demenor doesn't say anything. The next time he does it yell at him for a few seconds or even try barking aggressively and grab him by the scruff and hold him down. Your head shuould be up and chest puffed out as a sign of dominance. You may feel silly at first but dogs communicate mostly through bady language. I wouldn't recommend sprays or cheyenne pepper because he will eventually start to smell the spray and know not to chew where the spray is. Just remember that he is a puppy and it might take him weeks to learn but be consistent.

Usually if you get up and walk away and ignore them, puppies hate being ignored, so they get the message. They learn how to control their bite from their mother who growls and gets up and walks away, but maybe he was too young to learn that when you got him. Maybe you need to persevere with that, also some other things you should try -
do not snatch your hand away, because that is like a game to him, 'chase the hand' no sudden movements, no t not hit him on the nose, again, his reaction will be to nip, when he goes to mouth you, keep your hand still, even push it into his mouth and growl NO! at him, until he stops - then treat and praise him loads!. he will eventually desperately try to get away from the hand you are shoving at him. If you say 'ow' it must be in a very high, squeaky voice, like a hurt puppy.
Book an obiedience class to re- instate the training that you are the boss, it won't hurt

Well you can do a couple things... You can tap he ron the nose and tell her no and put her in a crate or something that she knows that she's bein punished... Or you can try a mussle:)
That I think would work but thetap on the nose would work even better!! Some people dont beleive in that but I know that I do and I know that it works cause I did it and neither one of my puppies try nippin or bitin:(

Do not play with him with your hands or feet, this is a learned behavior that can be reversed in time. Play time needs to involve toys and other constructive items. He needs to learn that biting the hands that feed him ends in a negative result.

provided that he's 9 weeks previous, and not something has worked however the "popping", he probable does not comprehend that biting hurts. i truthfully did this to my dogs who grew to become into 4 years previous and nonetheless bit with greater beneficial than playful stress. Take his ear and set your teeth on it. do no longer chomp down, yet slowly and progressively start up including stress till he yelps. that would prepare him that biting hurts. And confident i comprehend human beings won't trust that whether it may paintings. whilst he grabs your pants, provide up strolling, pry open his mouth say no and then start up strolling back. each time he nips at you once you're no longer enjoying, provide up him, say no (and that i trust popping, it gets their interest). additionally attempt chatting with a expert dogs coach and spot what they propose. sturdy success!

Been there - done that as they say. I would shake my finger and say no real loud until he sat down and calmed down and I would keep repeating this until he stopped completely and sat patiently.

If you can't get a handle on his aggressive behavior I would hire a trainer as soon as possible to teach him that you are the boss and top dog in that house. You have to learn to be the dominant one in this relationship or he will get worse over time.

you are never suppose to allow nipping behavior...when they are young and they start gnawing on you..you get them a chewy..and if they still try to chew on you...you tap them on the nose and say no.....everytime they try to nip......if you allow this to continue..your baby may never really hurt you..but they might end up getting a hold of someone else..and you don't want this to happen........look up dachshund rescue on the net...these are babies that were never taught how to behave...cute behavior when they are little...bad when they are grown.........

had dachshunds all my life.....
