According to the Code of Federal Regulations in the United States Flight Data Recorders must be bright orange or bright yellow with reflective tape to facilitate location underwater.

The two black boxes on the aircraft the flight data recorder (fdr)and the cockpit voice recorder (cvr) are both usually bright orange. They are manufactured in this color so when an accident does occur the NTSB can locate the recorders.

Black box is technical jargon for a device or system or object when it is viewed primarily in terms of its input and output characteristics.

Popularly, though almost always falsely, known as the black box used for aircraft mishap analysis, the FDR is also used to study air safety issues, material degradation, and jet engine performance. These ICAO regulated "black box" devices are often used as an aid in investigating aircraft mishaps, and its recovery is second only in importance to the recovery of victims’ bodies. The device's shroud is usually painted bright orange and generally located in the tail section of the aircraft.

Remember the reflective tape!

Here's the verbatim from one of our maintenance books...

The chassis and Crash Survivable Memory Unit (CSMU) on
these FDR’s are painted international orange. Two reflective stripes are located on the CSMU. The units weigh less than 11.0 ±0.5 pounds, with an underwater locating device
mounted on the CSMU.

Any bright color that can be easily picked up, Orange is the most popular one in use.

Depends. There are a LOT of black boxes in there, and most of them really ARE black.

The one you MAY be referring to, the flight data recorder, is orange to make it easier to find.

NO, you cannot build a plane as strong as the "black box" because it would be too heavy to fly if you did.
