The idea behind a la cart is that you get those cable channels that you want but excluding the ones that you don't. Out of 100 channels you only probably watch only like 20 if that many. The arguments for the cable companies including satelite against this is that if they offered this service the price will go up. This is because these companies get revenues from advertisement weather you watch them or not. Letting people choose a la carte then means that a lot of the less famous channels will barely get watch so it becomes more competitive for advertising people. This means that these companies won't pay for something that will not get watched so less revenue for the companies.
