They sell pizza dough boxes to store pizza dough balls in.

I used to run the pizza area of Movenpick and we made many individual doughs fresh daily and through them in the pizza boxes that we sprinkled flour in and place the doughs inside. There was only little gaps on the side for ventilation. If you had your lid on the plastic box the yeast probably had built up so much pressure that the lid popped. I would suggest placing a cloth or plastic wrap to cover dough to prevent skin formation.

from experience, the shop i worked at put dough in bags, but we always kept it cold.
