Tail docking and ear clipping are both for cosmetic purposes only.
The tails are done within the first couple of days because its much less painful and much easier to HEAL when they are this young.
LATER ADDED TO ANSWER ! -
Tail docking at any age hurts. But when they are only a couple of days old it does not hurt AS MUCH or for AS LONG as it would if an adult dog were to have it done.
The nerves and bones are not fully formed in a 2 day old puppy / verses a full grown fully developed adult dog.
It is obvious that it hurts an adult dog more.
I have worked as a vet tech and have seen it done both ways...
The adult dogs are in obvious pain for quite a while (WEEKS) after the 'surgery'
where as the 2 day old puppy has stopped showing any discomfort after a minute or two..

first of all i love boxers wonderful dogs. The main reason for docking tails is because it is a akc thing especially for dog shows as well as cropping of the ears. However most vets now will not do the ears because it is considered very mean, the tail on the other hand is done right after they are born and it takes all of 2 minutes and they are good to go. Neither docking or cropping is necessary if the dog isn't gonna be in dog shows like westminster.

Many people believe that dogs such as Boxers need their tails docked to stop them injuring their tails. These dogs have quite long lean tails and they believe they're more prone to fractures or trauma. They believe that it doesn't hurt the dog to dock the tail at such a young age. My personal opinion? (I am a registered veterinary surgeon with 16 years experience) It does hurt them when the tail is docked, and there is no medical reason to dock a tail. It is cosmetic. In many countries it is now illegal to dock a tail.

Docking is completely cosmetic and totally unnecessary.
Some dogs that have longer tails do injure their tailes, which in some cases would require an amputation. Otherwise, there's nothing that says dogs 'need' to have docked tails.
And, as this website points out, it does not hurt less when they're little.
