I've heard that it's better to wait a few hours and then wash them so the water doesn't help the spray absorb into the skin... it's just really cold out and I feel bad. Also, I know to use vinegar, baking soda dish soap and peroxide does any one have any other suggestions?????

P.S.~ Just so you guys all know I am NOT an idiot and wouldn't wash my dog outside... she was just sitting out there while I figured out what to do.
Also, luckily I think she only got it lightly in the face~ so it shouldn't be too bad.

I've only tried the peroxide recipe. It's pretty effective - you'll still smell a little whiff of skunk, but nothing like it is now. But it will bleach a dark dog's fur. Since I have a black dog now, if I ever need it I'll try one of the other two recipes or the Nature's Miracle deskunker. We used tomato juice on our dogs when I was a kid, and it really didn't work very well.

If it's really cold outside, plug up your nose, bring the dog in, and bathe him inside. You can rinse the tub & spray air freshener in the bathroom after you're done. It's the kindest thing to do - the dog has a very sensitive nose & the skunk odor irritates it terribly. Hopefully he's learned his lesson and it won't happen again.

I wonder how many of these people giving advice ever actually HAD to deal with a skunked dog? I have - TWICE..

I can tell you that tomato juice did nothing. It will NOT hurt your dog to use dish soap one time, for goodness sakes! You need to cut the oil - the baking soda, peroxide, dish soap thing is great to cut that.

You can then do a vinegar and water rinse after all that is out.

I have always used a good grease cutting dish soap(Dawn, Joy etc..) along with a vinegar rinse. It had been suggested to me years ago when I worked at a Wild Bird Clinic and we have baby skunks in, and I got sprayed in the face. Then years later I moved out to the country and had a Siberian Husky that just would not learn to leave skunks alone, and would have to bathe her on a somewhat regular basis. The dish soap and vinegar always worked well.

Dish soap is bad for dogs. It removes the much needed oils in their skin. I've heard Tomato Juice baths will take out the stinch, or at least help.

There is a special shampoo called Skunk Off. We use it at the shop and sell it for about seven dollars a bottle. After a few baths with that stuff your dog should definitly smell a whole lot better.

Tomato Juice and tons of it. Throughly saturate the dog and let it sit for at least 10 min. The acid in the juice is what kills the skunk odor. After rinsing, give a reg. bath.

I've tried the tomato juice, it doesn't work as well as this recipe. I live in an area with wild skunks, so my dogs get sprayed frequently. This is the best recipe.

OK, why does it matter if it is COLD OUT, number one? Wash your dog INDOORS in the tub or shower, for God's sake, it's FEBRUARY..............
They sell a special shampoo called "Skunk Out" at any good pet supply store or vet office, get that........... or if that is too expensive for you, I have also heard that tomato juice will help, but not as much as "Skunk Out". Just wash the dog with straight tomato juice, but PLEASE do this indoors........it's too cold to wash your dog outside.
