If you are really proficient at your job YES, your earnings really come from tips, rather than the "salary" you are paid.

As a freelance bartender I can honestly say YES, there is potential for excellent wages.

You have to be very good at your job, very personable, and attractive helps. The down fall is that the money is inconsistent. I worked 21 hours last week (not all in one bar) and made over $1000. Tonight I made $55 for 4 hours because of a big snow storm coming in. Considering that I live in a small Midwestern town that is still very good money. I am doing better as a freelance than when I was obligated to just one bar. The local bars know my reputation and know that I have a following and will bring in customers that don't normally frequent their bars. So the bar owners call and schedule my hours and pay from one week to the next. The pay they offer and the tips I can expect dictates which jobs I will accept. I travel between several towns and get to meet lots of different people.

One tip, don't get in the habit of drinking behind the bar. A drunk bartender is WORTHLESS!!

Good luck.

A good bartender in a good location can make a boatload of money. Be aware, however, that the good ones are very busy, and you're on your feet all of the time.

Yes, especially if you're attractive and good at your job. I suggest investing in bartending school, where they teach you all the drinks you'll need to know, as well as glassware, beverage history, and a few tricks. It also helps to be really personable and flirtatious.

Tips are better than what you'll get waiting tables. On the other hand, if you'll be tempted to sample the merchandise, don't even think about it.

depends on the bar... your skill, and the country you work in,... in the better bars you make a packet from tips.. in a dodgy bar you'll make nothing but your wage... which can be horrible.. in australia its pretty good for what the work is though.
