Traditional Role of Government
1. Provide Defense
2. Insure the monetary system

Evolved Role of Government
1. Promote competition and regulate business
2. Provide Public Goods that otherwise would not be produced or produced effectively
3.Promote social security and equality

Anyways, government is inevitable. As the Greeks surmised there are only a handful of governments that we will eventually fall into, if your still interested I can list all the possible forms of government and how they evolve or digress into eachother.

to "establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity"

This is from the preamble to the US Constitution. Let's examine each point.

1. Establish justice--without government of some sort, justice is basically whoever is the strongest or who has the most firepower.

2.Insure domestic tranquility--this means more than just having laws and courts--it means having a mechanism by which decisions can be made effecting a group by peaceful means. This means the right of open discussion and elections.

3.Provide for the common defense--if there is no government, who is going to keep the group over on the other side of the mountain, the river, or the ocean, from deciding to come over and kill you and steal all your land?

4.Promote the general welfare--this means providing things like roads and a postal service so that people and goods can get from place to place easily. It means setting up a stable society so that people can be occupied in businesses and professions and know that there will be an opportunity for them to be a success if they work hard.

5. Secure the blessings of liberty--no one is free if there is suppression. No one is free if they are not free to speak, free to worship (or not worship), free to assemble, free to petition for redress of grievances....our government was designed to make sure that we have the blessings of liberty.

When people in society are so diverse, we cannot rely on individual to make a common effort to build an orderly society. Until there is a great unity of all people in the world, government that serves to control how people behave will be needed. Of course, a good government will aim to educate people about the benefit of an orderly society.

Government isn't really neccessary. It's more like inevitable. Tear down the existing government, and someone else becomes the de-facto government. Even if its just a bunch of guys with machine guns and machetes driving around in old pickup trucks.

To control the destructive urges of a few who would endanger the many, to provide defense, to maintain an infrastructure, to protect certain identified rights and priveleges...Jefferson said it best, 'That government is best which governs least'. When we begin to view government as a potential enemy rather than as a provider we will have the correct perspective. When government officials see their role as servant, they will have the correct perspective. Until then, vote reform.

Would you want to live in a place were there is no government?
With no government comes no laws. People could storm into your house and there'd be no consequences. You could steal anything. You could DO anything. But we've all learned that comes to total CHAOS
