If it's a thick amount smash it up and vacuum it. Then, use warm water and a little soap to get the rest out. Blot dry with a towel.

KH is on track. Joint compound is a water base product that cleans up easily with water. Breaking it up and vacuuming, as others have stated, just minimizes the water cleanup part of the equation.

Most of the dried compound will pick off. Any parts that will not just place a wet towel on it for a while then scrub off the wet compound.

Use a stiff brush to break it into smaller bits. Then vacuum. Avoid using anything liquid till you've gotten almost all of it up.
