I have one of those hooded litter boxes with the little steps going up on the left hand side, and whenever she goes inside she starts mewing, almost like a whine. I'm not sure if this is while she's doing the do, but if I try to peek inside she gets freaked out and will run away. When she comes out she seems fine. Is this normal? Should I be concerned?

maybe it is dirty, or maybe she doesn't like it confined, or maybe she is having trouble and it is painful for her to do her business.

If this is a new behavior, you should take her to the vet - she may have a urinary infection or crystals, making urinating painful, or she may be constipated.

If she checks out OK at the vet, perhaps she doesn't like the hood? Try using an open-sided litterbox instead, and be sure to give her some privacy while she's using it (it's OK to peek at her from a distance, but you don't want her to feel like you're right there watching her).

Maybe you should try using a regular box instead of a hooded one some cats don't like the hooded litter boxes.

She may have a blockage or has an urinary track infection. I would check her litter box for a couple days and if you see blood in or around the litter box then call your vet and if she still cries and you see no blood still call your vet because she may not be pooping. I have four cats and I have one that sometimes can't poop and is on pills. I have another one who had a unirary blockage and had to have surgery and another one that gets frequent urinary track infections.

Has she ALWAYS done this??? (in this box)
If this is a new thing...........she may have a urinary tract infection and needs to be seen by the vet. Try to have her go in a box with NO litter so that you can collect a clean liquid urine sample and have the vet analyze it for bacteria or blood, etc. A urinary tract infection can kill your cat within 48 hours if not treated.

Just like some people sing in the shower, your kitty likes to sing while pooping.

How old is she? This is quite common for young kittens and they normally outgrow this behavior.
