sickle cell anemia is an example of how our body evolves to help itself survive. sickle cell anemia's purpose was to deal with the even bigger problem faced in africa: malaria. Malaria gets into the blood from mosquitos, however, it cannot survive on the sickle shaped cells, so those people stricken with sickle cell anemia are immune to malaria.

I knew mpre about this in the past. But this is what I remember----that the DNA for the sickle cell disease I RELATED in the genes to a protective characteristic for jungle living.
