Buffalo is a 12 hour drive from here! It's very far!

If you want to be in the Greater New York area but can't afford New York City rents (and these days who the hell can except for Donald Trump!) I'd recommend Yonkers, New York (on the border with the Borough of the Bronx and about 30 minutes from Midtown Manhattan via Metro North commuter train) and Newark, New Jersey (it's about 20 minutes from Midtown Manhattan by NJ Transit commuter train).

Both those cities are within easy commuting distance from the city, and are a lot more affordable!

About 450 miles along the New York State thruway.

Appx. 8 hours by car, one by plane. I suggest looking in the New York Metropolitan area instead, or even for a cheap apartment in manhattan, brooklyn, or queens, but watch out if you go for this option, because some neighborhoods aren't so great.
