I think that is is acceptable for kids to work while they are in highschool. As long as school is the number one priority. I was very active in highschool so i never had time to get a job because of all the activities i was involved in. But i think working gives you a sense of resposibility and a view and taste of the real world. And in some cases will make the person decide if college is a good investment or not.

Depends on the kid, the job, and the number of hours they are working. I don't think they should work more than about 10-15 hours a week, otherwise that cuts into homework & social life, etc. But some teenagers really benefit from having something constructive to do after school, especially if they are not playing sports or involved in other after school activities.

Another thing to consider is the job they are doing. I was thinking of going into journalism and had an after school job at the local newspaper my last two years of school, which was not just about money and keeping busy, it was a big help on my college application and with scholarships. I also came from a poor family and there were certain things I wouldn't have been able to do or have (prom, concerts, new clothes, etc.) very often if I wasn't working. My mother never asked me to work but I know it helped out a lot when I was able to start paying for some of those things that weren't necessities on my own.

I don't think there is one blanket answer for this. If we're talking about someone who is doing other constructive activities outside of school and has some level of personal responsibility built up through doing chores at home, etc. then I think it's fine if they don't work, but if it's someone who would be coming home after school and just getting into trouble it can be good for them to have a job and some responsibility.

The schoolwork issue also depends on the person. Some people have trouble juggling both. Personally I think my grades were better when I was working because I had to be more disciplined about getting my homework done around my work schedule. I don't think parents should insist on working or forbid it just on principle, I think they really need to take their teen's personality & character into consideration and weigh the value of having a job vs. having time to spend on other things for that child. Worked out great for me to have a job but my brother didn't work while he was going to school because he was involved in sports year round (I only played one in the spring) and had a harder time getting his homework done, which was probably the right choice for him.

We own a business and have had 2 high school students that worked for us starting in their Junior year. We did stress the importance of grades, and the parents were to notify us if grades dropped. The first one never had a problem in maintaining his work load and keeping his grades up. The second one his grades did start dropping, so we took him completely off the schedule until they improved. Once they did come up, we only work him now on Friday evenings and a little bit on Saturday. Both have shown a remarkable growth in maturity and we believe that it teaches them good work ethics when they do get out of school into a different work environment. They have to use reasoning during their job and have seen a growth in this as well. I would recommend work while in school. Some schools even have work programs where the student gets credit for the work that they do.

I think it would depend on how strong the student is in school. If the student is struggling with school and grades, then, I would say, no.

If the student is doing well and can carry 10-20 hours of work a week, then, I would say give it a try.

I babysat while I was in high school. I didn't drive until I was out of high school, so my options were limited. Also, I was very involved in extracurricular activities (which I enjoyed). If I was working, I would not have been able to do these.

One of the responders is right- the student's job is school. His/her job is to do well in school. Jobs come later!

If they are wanting expensive clothes, or a car, they should work. There is no reason that they cannot at least work on Fri & Sat nights and Sun, during the day. My son is not going to just be handed a car...he has to work for it like my siblings and I had to. Mc Donald's actually has incentive programs for kids with good grades...cash bonuses, and they pay up to $125 towards books for college.

I worked - but I wasn't much interested in what was going on at school anyway - I did participate in what interested me, but didn't attend every sport or social event. I think it would be overextending a teen to excel as student body president and work and participate in sports. That person should concentrate on school since they are getting a well rounded experience there. But for people like me - the dead time needed to be filled and it made me very fiscally responsible. Well rounded is the goal!

My mom didn't allow me to work while in high school. This was nice because I was able to concentrate on my school work completly. Yet, when going to find a part-time job after I graduated, it was harder because the only experience I had was volunteer work. It's hard now because I'm trying to find out how to balance work and college. College by itself is a hard enough task, if I had worked while in high school, I would have known already how to balance work and school.
While I do think it's a good idea to not let kids work while in high school, I think it's a better idea to let them work. Let's face it, at some point (unless your family is really rich) that child is going to have to work and go to school at the same time. You might as well let them raise some extra money towards college and learn how to balance and get experience while in high school.

I have no strong reason, because each student is different. If they feel they will benefit from having a job while in school, especially if they are doing well in school and it is easy for them, then they should do so.

However, I think school should come first. Your education is more important to your future than a part time job is.

I think it depends on the person. Some people are not able to both hold a job and keep good grades, but some are. If you feel that your child can then sure, make them get a part-time job. Maybe even have them stock 1/4 of their paychecks into savings.

From my own experience, I chose to work while in high school. I worked half my junior year into my whole senior year. It was great. I maintained all of my grades and was on the honor roll. I bought all the clothes that I wanted and I paid for my own prom and graduation needs. I learned how to budget and take care of my own finances. So it worked for me. But I was also responsible and my parents trusted me.
