I have something going on with my phone- I have local calls only, with AT&T, and don't have long distance. I have had a couple of situations happen recently with family members, one was in a car wreck, the other had a very bad breakup and divorce looming- Can my phone line possibly be tapped without government knowledge or permission? I hear what amounts to a "small beep" followed by a "larger beep" quite often, and the person whom I am talking to doesn't hear it. It's dam scary. I haven't done anything wrong- has anyone ever heard of this sort of thing? I am really concerned, and am afraid to say anything on the phone, that might be misconstrued...I have thought about calling my phone carrier with this question, but they will probably blow me off, cause as most of us know, customer service seems to be a thing of the past....any ideas?

What nation are you in. In Australia we have the Listening Devices act and telcos are bound by it to investigate. You more than likely have a problem at your line interface in the exchange, crosstalk between your copper pair or another fault. The only place that you can be tapped is at your exchange. Not likely as it requires telco permission and the protect their assets. You can also be tapped at the pit out the front of your house or where the line enters your house. When this is going on can you see someone there?

Digital celluar is a whole different ball game, but these calls carry 128 bit encryption. Unless your tapper is at NSA, then they are unlikely to crack it.

If governments wanted to monitor you, you wouldn't know about it. The Echelon network does that for them and only records sends calls of interest to be monitored off line.

I hope this calms your fears, unless you are a terrorist and then you can turn yourself into your local national security people.

actually you have the right to ask the carrier or phone company if you line has any sort of tap or half tap on it . its not a very popular question and they'll probably refer you to a different number but eventually they will have to let you know . hope the info helps of course state laws may apply as always

Go open up your phone box outside and check. It's really simple. Oh, and check your phone lines, follow them from the wall to the phone. Recorders can be hidden anywhere, but attached to the phone line. I know these things. :-)

I had a similar problem once...turned out that the beeping was because my headset battery was going flat and needed to be replaced...

Maybe you got "call waiting" on your phone. I do and my phone beeps when someone is calling my number while I am talking to someone else.
If not, call the phone company.

I know the feeling. I'm suspicious about my phone too. I think BIG brother is taking not of everything we say.

That sounds spooky...maybe you could go to the police station about it if it is really scaring you.
