i spoke to the officer and told him that i saw the bottle but did not touch it. i was not working near it, but in the same room. the homeowner was in the room with me all but the first few minutes i was there. As far as i can tell, there is no evidence other than his word against mine. any info on what could happen would be greatly appreciated.

They may investigate the claim, but without any proof beyond their word I wouldn't expect much to happen.

Edit - Heresay would include them saying they saw you take it. If there was an independent witness then their story would be considered more valid.

Sounds like you might be going to jail, or at the least getting fired from your job.
The reason I say this is that this incident must be weighing on your mind to the point that you are trying to ascertain what could be the police's next move. It's called a guilty conscience. The innocent man would have no compulsion to worry about what will happen next as they know they are innocent of the crime and therefore using their rationale see that the police will not be contacting them again (whether this is true or not, it is the belief of the innocent man).

If I were in your situation, I would have voluntarily let the officer search my vehicle and my home. What's the harm in it if I had nothing to hide? No matter what the cop haters say, the more you cooperate with the police the easier they will be on you.

If there is no evidence you are in the clear. You cannot convict someone on "hear say". If they say they "saw" you take it that would be evidence and a different matter.

If your not bonded you can get fired. If they have evidence you could be arrested.
