I know in almost all religions that, alcohol and pre-marital sex is forbidden. So why is it when muslims follow these rules we're considered extreme? Or when a muslim female covers up to which we are following the modesty of Mary we're "oppressed" but when a nun is covered she's considered "religious".?

Stereotyping with no thought. Or even an effort to give it. The times of now are geared towards a new form of discrimination. Religous discrimination. Is this ignorance or arrogance?

Peace be upon you and may you find your blessings with allah. Muah:)

Personally...I have always been told that if Muslims in Europe partake in pre-marital sex that the couple is stoned to death. In America these days, it seems to be just frowned upon. As far as the oppressed and religious thing, nuns have a choice. From what I have been told, Muslims in Europe do not, and I think a lot of people carry the idea that all Muslims have the same strict standards. I don't know if this is an answer, but I hope it helps.

I have never heard anyone say Muslims are extreme because they don't drink. I do believe any person that willingly blows themselves and others up is extreme. Muslim woman are very oppressed for many reasons. They are just property of men. They cannot go out alone. They allow themselves to be beaten by their husbands (oh, I forgot. Only as a last resort and not resulting in broken bones or blood shed). The clothes are just another example of that oppression. Nuns do not cover their face. Nuns are not told they will get raped if they dress differently and that it would be their fault. Apparently Muslim men don't have to be responsible for their lustful and illegal actions. Also, saying that all infidels should convert or die is a little extreme. Calling for the eradication of Israel is extreme. Following a pedophile is extreme. Following a con artist might not be extreme but it is dumb. I guess that's enough for now.

May God Bless you.

I love it how Christians say that Muslim women are "oppressed" because they cover up, but none of them would dream of trying to walk around topless. Or, God forbid, without any clothes on at all. You see, to Christians, when YOU cover up it's "extreme" and "oppression"; when THEY cover up it's "modesty" and "proper". It's so gosh darn funny.

I also think it's funny that Christians talk about how "oppressed" Muslim women are, and how "strict" Muslim culture is. Good grief; the only reason Christians aren't "oppressed" and "strict" is because they don't do a quarter of what THEIR holy book tells them to do. I suppose they just "interpret" it differently than they did in the old days, or something. They must have some excuse, no?

The difference is that christians don't practice the whole "no alcohol" and "no pre-marital sex" bits. They tend to cherry pick more and only obey the parts that suit them - and good thing too. It's only the extremists or fundamentalists who follow those.

And when a nun covers up it's because she's a member of the church and it's ok, she's not a regular member of society. Becoming a nun is a conscious choice, she isn't forced to be a nun or to cover herself up. I understand it's a choice for muslim women too, but there hardly seems to be understanding for those who elect not to, and so they seem pressured into doing it (or forced in some middle eastern societies).

So there's not much of a double standard or difference really.

There is a big difference between an order of nuns in 1 sect of Christianity covering up and the entire female population doing so. As for the alcohol, Jesus turned water into wine so the vast majority of Christians have no problem with that either.

The muslims get a bad rap from a few degenerates that engage in terrorist actions. Christians had there own scondrels in their past, they just aren't in the news now.

Nuns have a choice whether they want to be where they are. Unless a Muslim is in a free western nation, 9 times outta 10 they do NOT have a choice.

A nun is a religious person. She voluntarily makes vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. Not all nuns wear veils and a habit. Some decided that such habit and veil marked them apart from communities.
Modesty is one thing but not all women who cover up are modest, some are doing it for show.
If you cover up and say you are modest then by implication you also say those who do not cover up are immodest. That is the contention.

First, is following those rules in the Muslim world, voluntary? What happens to a girl/woman who goes out in public and she is not "covered up"? Secondly, when nuns cover up, they are following the custom of their religious order, but women who aren't nuns don't have to wear the same type of clothes, and they don't.

When we see Muslim women, in the Muslim world, follow those modesty rules, voluntarily, and nothing happening to ones who choose not to, then we will stop considering muslims to be "extreme."

No one calls Muslims extremists if they don't drink alcohol or have pre-marital sex.
No one is mad with Muslim women for dressing modestly; however, covering the face makes no sense.
Please don't compare Muslim women's dress with nuns...you do know better.
