My dog keeps throwing up even after the vet provided special canned dog food; what should I do? He apparently has a liver problem, and on his bloodwork, he has an abnormally high amount of a liver enzyme called "Alkaline Phosphatase"; he has 991 H when the average should be 10-84. :(

EDIT: My dog is almost 9 yrs old...vet suspects liver failure or cancer. She also prescribed antibiotics which DID work for 2 weeks...but now it doesn't seem like he's feeling any better anymore.

I am a vet. How old is your dog? It could be liver disease, in which case he may need to be hospitalized on IV fluids and antibiotcs for a few days, and that can help. It may also be cancer, or it could be pancreatitis. You should see your vet again. There is not much you can do at home... he should probably be hospitalized.

Consult with your vet but it's possible that the vomiting is stress related. I had a German Shepard that threw up almost on a daily basis because he was so stressed. Observe your dogs behavior and if he seems bored, fidgety, scared, or anxious then it is probably stress related. The best way to deal with a stressed dog is to give him one benadryll a day for a week while providing him with a more one on one activities or if he is scared frequently comfort him by talking to him in a soothing tone while encouraging him to do new things or go new places. This will build his confidence. But you should consult with your vet too just to make sure it's not a medically related problem either. If the vet didn't take a sample of the vomit I would recomend you put a small amount in a ziploc bag or small jar and take it with you to the vet just to see if there is any evidence of illness in the speciment itself.

I'm thinking they probably gave you the most bland Hills Science diet canned food they had. If the dog can't keep this down you may need to talk with the vet again about giving the dog a shot for nausea first.

When a dog is sick like that you want to only give them tiny amounts of food at first till their stomach gets use to food in it again. If the dog vomits, wait an hour at least then give it small amounts of water, if the water stays down after an hour give it like 2 table spoons of food and wait to see if that stays in the dog for over an hour. Repeat for the first 24-48 hours till the dog isn't vomiting and then slowly you can increase how much food you are giving at a time and space it out further.

If the animal hasn't been able to keep food or water down for awhile (2 days) they may need some IV fluids to keep them from dehydrating.

well i think you should just take away the cans foods that youre vet gave you to have youre dog to eat . well some times dogs does have foods habits like maybe the foods that they told you feed to youre dog is making the dog sick and throwing up all the time . i just not use or open any other dogs foods yet til the vet check out with you and youre dog . if something wrong with the food i would just return the dog food back to the store and get youre money back and go look for a better new dog foods that will not have the dog throwing up again .

Keep taking it to the vet until the vet gets too tired with you that he gives the most powerful cure there is on the face of the earth.

Call your vet and tell him about the vomiting. It is a serious symptom when your dog already has liver problems.
