At least 8 weeks but most reputable breeders keep them for 10 to 12. In California it is illegal for a puppy to be sold and taken home before it reaches 10 weeks.

A puppy should be 8 weeks old before it leaves its mother, even if the puppy is only going to its mother for milk once a day and eating puppy food, it still needs to stay with her. An animals immune system is not fully developed until roughly 8 weeks and therefore its needs its mothers milk for their antibodies.

That depends on the breed. In smaller toys it is more like 12 weeks, in most dog breeds rule of thumb used to be no soner than 6 weeks but has recently been moved to 8.

In many states, it is ILLEGAL to buy, give away, or sell puppies before 8 weeks. 6 weeks is too young and there have been studies that have shown that 8+ weeks is best.
