How many months before the wedding should they be sent?

Traditionally invitations are sent 4-6 weeks prior to the wedding date. If you are having a wedding on a weekend between May and September or near a major holiday weekend you should send the invitation out 6-8 weeks prior to the date.

Be sure to request all RSVPs 2 weeks before the wedding so you'll have time to call those who haven't sent their reply. You'll need an accurate head count if you are having your reception catered. Most caterers require the final count to be in anywhere from 3-7 days before the event.

The invitations should be sent 6 weeks before the wedding, because if you send them to early people might forget to attend.
