these can be dangerous - see, you probably used a box colour, and that's the first problem. these are called "metallic colours," and when they're mixed with more chemicals, it's true - you can literally "melt" your hair off if you try to get rid of it.
as a cosmetologist, we're trained to be especially cautious when removing bad colour. honestly, if you're concerned about losing your hair, don't try to fix it at home.
before i went to school, i used the cheapo colour, and i did buy a colour stripping kit. my hair is short, so i was less worried about breakage and hair loss, but it did occur.
your best bet would be find a cosmetology school in your area and have them fix it for you - first of all, it'll be way cheaper than an actual salon, it's good practice for them, and there will be an instructor on hand to make sure everything is running smoothly.
another thing is, i've had to do a colour correction on black hair, and often the strippers don't even work. so before you know it, you're gonna end up spending WAY more than you bargained for!
sometimes it's necessary to do multiple applications. sometimes, we use bleach instead. but we're trained to pick out what the best option for your specific situation - much more controlled than telling you what's best for you over the internet.
honestly - please don't try this at home. you will be so upset with yourself if something goes horribly wrong - you won't know what to do to fix it! at the salon, they can get the black out and then help you find the perfect brown (or blonde!) to suit you!
IF you insist on doing it at home, go to sally beauty supply and pick up the loreal colour zap kit. make sure you read the directions and follow them exactly. don't just slap it on and wait - make sure you watch the product process the entire time it's on. when i used it, i only had to leave it on for 5 MINUTES!
if you go brown, pick some of that up at sallys as well, and buy a cottle of 20 developer. look for a level 4 or 5 in the browns, as that's about as light as your'e going to be able to get your hair. (ask for help if you don't know what you're looking for). i personally like the ion colour line - it's like, $2.99!
you're going to mix the colour and developer 1:1, or 2 oz of both. you won't be able to get your hair light enough for blonde right now - don't even try, or you're gonna lose your hair. all you have to do with the colour zap is lighten your hair up to a coppery orange, rinse, blow dry, and apply the colour mixture as fast and evenly as you can. wait about 25 minutes, rinse, and you should be good to go.
now, i don't normally condone this AT ALL, because the worst thing is colour correction. but since i was once an aspiring (poor!) colourist, i felt like being generous and giving you a quick lesson on how to do it at home.
but if you're at all scared about the side effects of at-home colour, just go to a salon! you'll end up being so much more satisfied with the end result.
hope this helps! email me with questions

Leave it to the professionals! Please. I stripped my own hair before and it was absolutley awful - Like wire, I kid you not. You are better off having the trained hairdresser stripping it AND colouring it and once its done and in sound condition you do the touch ups yourself at home (although I would never recommend dying your hair yourself.) If you can, use a semi-permenant colour. With porous and damaged hair they tend to work the best - conditioning wise and damage.

never do anything with dying your hair at home. i tried dying my hair blonde once at home, and half of my head was still brown. its easier to get a proffesional to do it for u, and it lasts longer in your hair, too.
