Depends on where you live. On average, it's a lot higher than the rest of the country, unless you live in Miami or New York City. San Francisco is the second most expensive city in the US and the homes are outrageous. San Diego also has really high housing costs, as does a lot of Los Angeles. From personal experience living in Los Angeles, if you rent, expect to pay a minimum of $1000 a month for a one bedroom (if you live in the Valley) and more like $1800 if you live in West Hollywood. Homes in LA start out at $500,000, and it's hard to find a condo for less than $325,000. The weather is gorgeous though, and the job market is very good. You don't spend a lot of money on utitlites because of the weather, you normally don't have to pay for parking and the cost of fresh produce (which you have access to all year around) is very low. The only other drawback is that you have to have a car since the public transportation isn't as accessible and the insurance is higher (I paid around $125 a month with a perfect driving record).

Housing and gas are more expensive, but everything else is about the same. Electricity is more but we also use the least per capita so it evens out. Property taxes are lower here as a percentage, but the higher housing prices make it a lot if you have boughten recently. You get used to it after a while, it's not that bad and you have so many amentities that people spend thousands of dollars to travel to that are right in your backyard.

Housing is high. --very high. But other things can be dealt with.
The interior counties and the extreme north are a lot more reasonable.
But the Coast is very high.

Very High in San Fran, Very High in LA and High in San Diego!

San Fran and LA pay more, but housing is very costly.

I would recommend San Diego, however, housing is starting to climb and the wages are stagnant.
